Unable to create lock file for jira.home

forums-5
I downloaded the trial of Jira and was able to run it only once. I shut it down trying to install one of the plugins (Greenhopper) but now I cannot restart it. Every time I start the Jira server I see a message saying: *JIRA startup failed. JIRA has been locked.*

The server stays up though, but when I try to open JIRA I get the following message:
*Unable to create lock file for jira.home*

Can someone please help me out with this because I've searched all over the web and it feels like I'm the first person in the world to get this problem.

If it helps, I am running it on Windows 7 and these are the last few lines reported by Tomcat:

Re: Unable to create lock file for jira.home

This refers to a file called 'jira-home.lock' in the 'Application Data\JIRA' folder. Basically, look for the folder that includes the plugins directory, find the 'jira-home.lock' file, and delete it.

This file is used to detect two running instances on the same system install. Once you delete this, restart. You'll be fine at that point.

Also, always run the shutdown.bat script to shutdown, instead of just killing startup.bat.

Thanks!
Jared

Yep, don't feel alone, many of us have hit this problem.  It's actually a good thing, because it's preventing you from potentially doing damage to your data with a couple of keystrokes!

Jared has covered the answer for most cases, but I'd also like to add that you might want to check operating system level stuff - permissions on the file and directory, and check that nothing else is locking the files in there open (try "lsof | grep jira" if you're running a decent OS)

Hi,

I am also facing same problem. I have deleted .lock file from Jira home directory but it does not work for me.

What else I have to do?

Thanks in advance.

Without knowing exactly what you've done, there's not a lot we can help you with.

You need to identify where the lock file is coming from, stop whatever is keeping it there, delete it and try Jira cleanly again.

Re: Unable to create lock file for jira.home

Hi Nic,

Thanks for your reply.

I have just installed trial version of Jira 4.12 on my machine (Windows Vista). After finishing installation, I was able to access Jira. But as I shut Jira Down and restart it I get an error "JIRA startup failed. JIRA has been locked" in tomcat window.

I have deleted 'jira-home.lock' file from home directory 'C:\Program Files\Atlassian\JIRA'. I am still getting same error "JIRA startup failed. JIRA has been locked".

Am I doing something wrong?

How to identify where the lock file coming from?

Re: Unable to create lock file for jira.home

Possibly not - it doesn't always respond to shut-down commands if there is something wrong, and if you kill it by hand, it will always leave a lock file there.  Run the shutdown command a couple of times, and then use the task manager to find out if any java instances are running - kill them if they are.

Re: Unable to create lock file for jira.home

Hi,

Thanks again for your reply.

My problem is solved. I have changed my home directory from 'C:\Program Files\Atlassian\JIRA' to 'D:\JIRA' (by reinstalling JIRA). I guess this was permission related problem. I might not getting access to my older home directory location.

And I think second problem was HSQLDB (default database), which stores information in memory. I have changed my database to MSSQL 2008. Now it is working as expected. :)

I had the same problem with the new 4.3 install. Even after shutting down normally it would complain about locks on the next start, ie. I could never start it more than once.

I'm on Windows 7 and fixed it by changing the security properties for the Atlassian folder to give full control to the 'users' group I was part of. You should be able to find a user/group you are a part of and grant full control.

Re: Unable to create lock file for jira.home

I went to the installed folder on my windows 7 system and set permissions for logged on system user to full access.  Installed system is a Windows 7 laptop and installation will be single user. This is a private installations. The reason it worked right after installation is the install was done while at administrator level. When I, start Jira it was at user level.
