browser hangs after JIRA installation

forums-5
Hi all -

I just installed JIRA 4.3.1, apparently successfully, and elected to launch JIRA when finishing the installation wizard.
This took a long time to open a firefox browser, which then tried to connect to http://localhost:8080 (as expected).
After about 5 minutes i gave up, and opened Internet Explorer with the same URL; same result, tried again and evetually got an error page indicating "The request timed out".

Previously, I had the JIRA 4.2 evaluation installed, and up and running.
Before installing 4.3.1, I uninstalled 4.2 using [Start] > Programs > JIRA 4.2 > Uninstall.

I have
- Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 3
- Intel Duo CPU 2.33 GHz
- 2 GB RAM

I am within a corporate network - maybe I need to change some configurations of firewall and/or proxy?

thanks for any hints - John.

Re: browser hangs after JIRA installation

In addition, I have noticed that tomcat6.exe is chewing up 50% of my dual core CPU, continuously, even though I am no longer attempting to access JIRA.
Help - John.

Start by reading the Jira application log - is it actually starting properly?  It may be that it's looping or hanging during startup, so it never answers a request.  Or yes, it could be your networking, but we need to rule out Jira starting up incorrectly before we can chase that!

Hi Nic -
thanks for the answer. The logs do show that something is amiss:

(I am assuming the German is due to my being in Austria).

I guess this means I will need to increase memory quotas somewhere. Could you steer me quickly in the correct direction, please?

He, that's an old favourite.  You need to increase the Permgen space, Jira tends to run out if you use the defaults.  Instructions are at http://confluence.atlassian.com/display/JIRAKB/JIRA+Crashes+Due+to+%27java.lang.OutOfMemoryError+PermGen+Space+Error

Re: browser hangs after JIRA installation

Hi again -
I noticed the caveat
+There is also a known bug with JIRA 4.3.1 that can cause this error to occur on Windows Systems. Upgrading to 4.3.2 will resolve it in this instance.+
and chose to download and attempt to install 4.3.2; the problem did not reappear, but now I know how to recognize and (I hope) fix a memory error.
Thank you - ciao - John.
